[ A Love affair with THE SEA ]

Valora is a 43’ schooner completed in 2018, designed and built by Nathaniel and David Stimson at their yard in Boothbay, Maine. Her “crew” is a collection of friends and family that first coalesced around Valora’s predecessor in 2006 and everyone you will meet – on or around the boat – is grateful for the opportunity to share the joy that is Valora.

Her design was inspired by the designs of Commodore Ralph Monroe who lived, designed and built boats in Coconut Grove, Florida in the late 18 – early 1900’s – so while Valora is a new boat – she is of traditional design and construction and could have just as easily been built a hundred years ago. There is a wonderful book; The Good Little Ship by Vincent Gilpin that describes the attributes of Monroe’s designs – highlighted by shallow draft and big centerboards – a wonderful combination for the coastal sailing we like to do – yet thoroughly seaworthy for offshore work. Valora evidences an easy motion and we hope you’ll soon get to enjoy a sail with us as we launch our charter business in 2019!

Valora is a working boat. She was built to accommodate day charters in and around Martha’s Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands.  During our first season in the summer of 2019, she will be running 2-4 hour charters as our schedule permits while working exclusively with the Lambert’s Cove Inn and offering full package charters for their guests. All other available times she will be available for private charter for a full day. Valora is captained by Lu Yoder who is almost always  accompanied by Hoku, his Skipperke.

Valora’s main cockpit holds 8 adults comfortably.  She is a working boat so from time to time the crew will have to pop in and let the centerboard up or down and run and down the decks.  Guests are encouraged to bring their own food and beverage and there is room to stow a cooler or two in the aft cabin.   Valora has a head (bathroom) in the forward cabin below decks.

Valora is a Presto-type centerboard schooner with a LOA of 43’3”. Valora’s design makes her very stable and comfortable with a 12’6” beam. She draws 3’8” with the centerboard up allowing her to navigate the shallow waters and pop in and out of bays and harbors on her adventures even at low tide.
